Dedrick Sims, Founder
Dedrick Sims has been serving urban students since 1999 both as a teacher and an educational leader. This journey prepared him to found and lead the Sims-Fayola Foundation where he currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Board President. Dedrick’s career in urban education began in a high school classroom as a substitute teacher. His passion for educating and equipping youth and other educators propelled him into the following roles: High School Biology and Chemistry Teacher, Secondary Curriculum Administrator, Master Lead Teacher, Technology Coordinator, Alternative School Teacher, Dean of Students/Assistant Principal, Director of Student Achievement, and Principal of both traditional and charter public schools (Co-Ed and Single Gender).
Dedrick is also the author of two books, Hardwired By Nature: What We As Educators Underestimate About Our Minority Students and The Dedrick Sims Reader. Additionally, he has penned several articles that focus on improving education for students of color.
As an educational architect and civic leader, Dedrick has engaged in selective and respected professional development through the University of Kentucky’s Superintendent Licensure Program, KIPP Principal Leadership Program, New Leaders for New Schools Principal Program, Gulf Coast Business Leadership Council, as a TeachNOLA’s Master Teacher Corps Selector, Harvard’s Project Zero, SUPES Superintendent Academy in Hartford Connecticut, Denver’s Get Smart Schools Leadership Fellowship Program, and most recently Leadership Denver and Colorado’s Leadership Exchange with Nashville’s top leadership, both with the Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce.
Dedrick’s current community involvement includes serving as an appointed member of the Governor’s Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Council, Denver African American Philanthropists, past board chairman of the Young Philanthropists Foundation, Board Member of Burns Center for Poverty and Homelessness, Board Member of the Bridge Project, Board President of Hill Harper's Manifest Your Destiny Foundation, and currently as the Senior Education Advisor to Mississippi State Representative Jeremy Anderson. Furthermore, Dedrick has served his country as an officer in the United States Army.
